Windows 10 end of support: what it means and what to do

By the MasterKeys support team · Last reviewed

Short answer: Microsoft ended free support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. Windows 10 still runs and activates, but security updates now need paid Extended Security Updates (ESU). The best fix is to upgrade to Windows 11, which is free on eligible PCs that already run an activated Windows 10.

What still works

  • Your PC boots, your apps run, and Windows 10 keys still activate.
  • Microsoft no longer ships free security or feature updates, or technical support.

Your options

  1. Upgrade to Windows 11. Check with the PC Health Check app. An activated Windows 10 PC that meets the requirements upgrades free.
  2. Buy Windows 11 for a new or rebuilt PC.
  3. Enroll in ESU to keep receiving security updates on Windows 10 for a limited time.

A Windows 10 Home or Pro key also activates the matching Windows 11 edition on supported hardware.
